This Coffee's Story

A fantastic example of all that is wonderful about Ethiopian coffee! Legend has it that a goatherd named Kaldi first discovered coffee growing in Ethiopia in the 5th century when he noticed his goats behaving strangely after eating the cherries! We don’t blame those goats considering how much history you can taste in the cup! This lot from Nesru Aba Nura’s 9-hectare farm in Jimma’s Kota Kebele is bursting with complexity and a tropical, stone fruit-like character! There are delicious fruity and floral notes which make this a coffee best suited to paper filter methods and served without milk.

Nesru and her husband Mensur, a fellow coffee producer, are both members of the Tokuma Group - a collective of producers in Western Ethiopia, each with medium sized farms and their own export licences. Most of the Tokuma producers work with natural processing and have perfected the process over the years, drying their cherry on raised beds for an average of 21 days which results in a wonderful sweetness and great clarity of flavour. Although the group’s coffees are not certified, they operate a semi-forested style of production utilising a good amount of shade and a strict no synthetic or toxic agrochemical policy. The group choose to market their coffees together and share knowledge with each other which allows them to each improve quality. In fact, over the last three years our import partner Osito have seen the overall quality and consistency improve year over year within the group.

It’s exciting for us to be able to showcase a single producer lot, as previously in Ethiopia, most coffees were being sold via washing stations or regions like Yirgacheffe. This is due to a recent change from the authorities, who now allow farmers to export their coffee as their own. We are grateful for the opportunity to work with Nesru and share her exceptional coffee with you all.
