This Coffee's Story

Burundi is a small, landlocked nation in East Africa. It is a country often under-appreciated as a coffee producer but is happily gaining a reputation for outstanding quality lots that rival those of its neighbour's Rwanda, Tanzania and the DRC. We had the privilege of visiting in 2017 when our co-founder Hols was on the tasting panel for the prestigious Cup of Excellence competition. This experience was incredibly educational in learning more about the workings of the coffee market there and the opportunities there are for true social and economic development with a more quality-minded approach.

We are always searching for better ways of working to try to undo structures that exist to prioritise buyer over producer and are therefore delighted to showcase yet another standout coffee from Raw Material’s Izuba Washing Station. Non-profit social enterprise Raw Material’s goal in Burundi is simple - to secure higher profits for coffee producers and employees of station staff alike. All profits are donated back to the producers they buy from through the purchase of coffee and investments back into the surrounding coffee growing communities.

This is a super sweet honey lot best suited to be enjoyed without milk on paper filter methods.

Not my favourite!

I struggled to get on with this coffee! Based on the description I thought I would love it, but I seem to be stuck with a flat cup and persistent cereal-y flavour that I’m not a huge fan of.

I’m not really sure if it was something I was doing wrong, but the coffee just never seemed to sing like other North Star roasts (looking at you Colombia La Colmena..). I struggle to get the sweetness I usually look for, I was flip flopping between a hollow cup of coffee and a bitter cup of coffee.

To brew, I used a DF64 gen2 with stock burrs and a clever dripper or v60 depending on how much time I have, or what I fancy at the time.

I’m going to try making an Americano with them next and see if that makes any difference!
