Mexico Sierra Mazateca

We are so happy to have a Mexican coffee on our offer list once more – this lot is actually a component of our house blend and has been performing so well on the cupping table that we wanted to showcase it all by itself. Once again we have worked with the wonderful Raw Material who are fighting to ensure coffee does not disappear from this region following dramatic yield losses due to climate change. Their buying model and way of working is totally focused on building producer trust and more viable business models so that we can hopefully keep roasting this delicious coffee for you for years to come.

This Coffee's Story

James, our Coffee Program Manager, had the pleasure of visiting our producer partners over in the southern states of Mexico at the start of the year. A trip which saw him travel from high in the misty mountains of the Sierra Juarez, through the cactus fields and deserts of the Sierra Mazateca and finally down to the sunny seaside coast of the Sierra Sur. An unforgettable trip which gave a new found understanding of the value of Oaxacan coffee and an understanding of the role we roasters need to play to ensure its survival - not just to preserve the unique coffees from this region but to support a new generation with a way of life that has become deep-rooted to Oaxacan culture.

Whilst there he was on the lookout for a new component for our house blend, 'The Docks'. One that was just as (if not more) tasty than the previous and a lot more impactful to boot. Funnily enough you get to cup a lot of coffee on origin trips and from the moment James sampled a couple of washed Mazatecan lots he knew there and then that this was the blend component that he was looking for. These coffees are typically known for their herbal, sometimes pleasantly savoury character but this regional lot was so much more than that with complex, fruit-forward orange and nectarine notes. Upon returning to the UK, wheels were put in motion to introduce the Sierra Mazateca washed lot into the blend, and after vigorous testing we were super impressed with the results. In fact, we were so impressed by this new component that after a few weeks of sampling this on it's own during quality control cuppings, we felt it deserved to feature as our latest base range single origin offering. This is a coffee that is as complex as it is balanced, providing beautiful fruit character, a syrupy mouthfeel and a versatility that sees it work fantastically, both with and without milk.

This amazing coffee has been sourced from the Mazateca producer group, who are an important indigenous community in the region of Oaxaca. A group that is famed for producing some of the most complex coffees in Mexico, an incredible achievement considering the many complexities that come with producing coffee in the Southern states. Farms are isolated and widespread, crops are at high risk to climate-related volatility and access to finance and agricultural inputs is extremely limited. Because of this, production yields are some of the lowest in Mexico. By purchasing this coffee, we are making a long term commitment to this amazing group of producers, making up the end of a stable and profitable supply chain and providing a home for their beautiful coffee.
